Design & Build Services
The Timmerman Design team provides consultation and full design services producing everything from conceptual models & renders to full scale drawings. Experts at incorporating heavy timber and traditional joinery into a design has brought us to the forefront of the industry and we enjoy the challenges that every design entails.
Planning
You may well have a very clear idea of what you want your home or cottage to look like and this will greatly simplify the design experience, as we need only design a timber frame or a great room or other elements to your ideas.
A discussion of the various styles of timber construction will be a part of the design experience, and we are pleased to offer our experience and expertise in the various methods. Japanese temples, historic barns of Ontario, European cathedrals, and homes ranging in taste from rustic to ultramodern have all been built using timbers and traditional hand cut joinery, and the evolution continues. It is our hope that we can work with you to create a home that is entirely yours, that will be a part of this great tradition for many generations.
Once the design has been approved to the satisfaction of client, engineer, and municipality, and the project is moved into production. Permits are secured, services are introduced, and in our shop, wood is ordered cutting begins.
Site Visits & Permits
We strongly recommend a site visit, where we can create an accurate three dimensional topographical map of your site, and examine setbacks from water and property lines. Discussion of views, access, driveway and permits will provide us with insight as to how to proceed with items such as shape and orientation.
From Shop Drawings to Shop Production
Our shop drawings are detailed to an accuracy of 1/64th of an inch, and our layout team are accurate to within 1/32nd. Regardless of the type or species of wood, we carefully inspect each and every piece of your home, and orient it in the frame to suit considerations like strength, load and beauty.
This accuracy is guaranteed by a quality control process that sees each piece checked independently by the craftsman responsible for cutting the piece. Once all the timbers have been cut it is time to pre fit the frame elements in the shop. Each section of the frame is fit together in our shop, and assembled to ensure that the finished frame is correct in all regards, the dimensions are as indicated in the plans and each joint is tight and beautiful. When all elements have been fit, they are sanded or adzed, and in some instances finished with a product of the clients specification.
When the site is developed to the point where they are ready to install and enclose the timber frame it is trucked to site and raised. The raising of a frame is a special privilege for the men and women who have worked to create this one of a kind structure, there is something visceral in putting up heavy timber that has some of your essence in it.
We are proud to say that our crew enjoys their craft, and thrive within the team attitude that building such beautiful cooperative projects requires. Our craftsmen are professionals who take their responsibilities seriously, who take great pride in their skill and will take great pride in your project.
